Hunnert Car Pile-Up organizers say this is last year for popular event

By CHRIS LUSVARDI - H&R Staff Writer | Posted: Sunday, October 9, 2011 12:01 am

DECATUR - After a 10-year run, the Chrome Czars Car Club held the Hunnert Car Pile-Up for the final time Saturday at Progress City USA.

Running the show simply became too much work for the club's nine members from the Chicago area and volunteer coordinator Catherine Mayotte, said Mike Ferrari, a club member whose nickname is Magnet. The decision was made when the club's members realized in the past few months they couldn't keep doing it as they continued to get older and busier, Ferrari said.

"It's hard to put on something like this," Ferrari said. "Instead of letting it get so big that it self-implodes, it's time to just stop. We felt 10 years would be a perfect time to go out on top. When we moved it down here, we were thinking it would go on another 15 years."

The car show was first held in Morris before outgrowing its site there and moving to Decatur for the first time last year. Although attendance seemed to drop a little from last year when it attracted nearly 15,000 people, Ferrari he still expected it to draw a crowd of about 10,000 as a steady stream of cars and spectators filled over a fourth of the 80-acre site.

Entry into the event is strictly limited to 1964 and earlier hot rods and customs.

The Chrome Czars were able take its own unique approach to a car show, and Ferrari said it's a legacy they want to keep while being supportive of other efforts that might come about.

"The Pile-Up had its 10 years," Ferrari said. "We'd like to see downstate clubs do big shows. We'd get behind anything like that."

The end of the show's run leaves those such as first-time attendees Eric Goodrich and Joe Farley from Buffalo, N.Y., disappointed they won't be able to come back for another time after a bit of hesitation.....
